I have owned an E4200 v1 for a couple years and after trailing out DD-WRT and Tomato, I would say that Tomato is the way to go for E4200 v1. E4200 V2 is not supported so I cannot speak for it. You CAN run DD-WRT. DD-WRT never overwrote the CFE. The only firmware that overwrote the CFE was Xvortex. Xvortex is a ILLEGAL Firmware. You have No access to source code, and it uses modules Licensed only to ASUS on Netgear routers. Use DD-WRT or Freshtomato, they both have there strong and weak points, I have used both.
